Johannesburg, South Africa – City Power has issued a strong appeal to residents of Johannesburg to use electricity sparingly as the power system faces significant strain.
The warning comes amid concerns about potential load reduction measures that may need to be reintroduced to avoid a total grid collapse.
While load shedding has not been implemented recently, City Power has emphasized that the system remains constrained. Notices issued by the entity and updates on its social media platforms, such as Twitter, consistently urge residents to reduce electricity consumption to prevent system overload.
Additionally, City Power has advised that inclement weather conditions could further delay response times to outages.
The situation is worsened by the current skeletal staff arrangements due to the time of year as most of it’s staff are on holidays. However, City Power has called back additional personnel to address the high volume of outages.
Reports suggest that some residents have been without power for up to six days, increasing frustrations across the city.
Businesses, too, are feeling the impact of the power constraints. Speaking to a local news reporter, Regan Ross, owner of Ross Ink Tattoos, expressed concern about the potential implications of a strained power system on business operations.
City Power has assured residents that efforts are underway to resolve outstanding issues and stabilize the system.
